U.S. vehicle safety regulators have launched an investigation to determine whether a May recall of Ford F-150 pickup trucks for brake failure should be expanded to include additional models.

What’s the problem?
October 4, 2016 – The investigation affects about 282,000 Ford F-150 trucks with 3.5-liter, 6-cylinder engines from model years 2015 and 2016. The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) says it has received at least 25 customer complaints of sudden brake loss in the vehicles. To date, no crashes or injuries have been linked to the problem.
In May, Ford issued a recall for about 271,000 F-150 pickups in North America after reports surfaced of brake fluid leaking from the master cylinder, which could reduce the ability of the front brakes to stop the trucks. The company said it was aware of at least 9 crashes with no injuries associated with the problem; however, one person said they suffered a knee injury while applying the brakes.
Ford says it is cooperating with the ongoing investigation. “We continuously evaluate our processes for potential improvements and when the data indicates a safety recall is needed, we move quickly on behalf of our customers,” the company said.
The probe was 1 of 3 launched for Ford vehicles last week. Separate investigations into 2011-2013 model year Edge SUVs and 2010 Fusion sedans were announced by the NHTSA on Monday.
