At least 9 breast implant recipients have died from complications of anaplastic large cell lymphoma, a rare cancer that affects cells in the immune system, FDA said.

While ALCL is not classified as a breast cancer, it is typically found around breast implants. FDA also said the disease is more likely to occur in women who have implants with a textured coating rather than a smooth coating.

Textured implants, which have a rougher outer layer meant to adhere to tissue surrounding them, are used in cases where the patient and surgeon do not want the implant to move around within the breast pocket.

In addition to the warning letter, FDA sent a separate letter to medical professionals discussing the link between breast implants and lymphoma in hopes of further increasing the chances of diagnosing ALCL early, when the prognosis is much more favorable and the disease is far easier to treat.

“We want all healthcare providers to be aware … particularly in patients with new swelling, lumps, or pain around breast implants, to expedite diagnosis of this malignancy,” FDA said. “We are also asking health care providers to report to the FDA cases of Breast Implant Associated – Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma. (BIA-ALCL) in patients with breast implants. This includes reporting individual cases as well as rates you may have experienced during your practice.”
