What’s the Problem?
April 26, 2017 – Pfizer and BMS this week sued 13 generic drug manufacturers, in addition to 3 last week, naming companies including Mylan, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories and Accord Healthcare as defendants.
The partners have plenty at stake when it comes to protecting their blockbuster anticoagulant Eliquis. Last year, it earned BMS about $3.3 billion, up nearly 60% from the $1.9 billion it generated in 2016.
Eliquis is among the top-selling drugs for both companies, and they have gone to great lengths to market it. Pfizer spent approximately $174 million on direct-to-consumer advertising for Eliquis in 2016, ranking it 3rd among the top 20 advertised medications.
Eliquis is used to prevent blood clots in the veins after a hip or knee replacement surgery, as well as in patients with atrial fibrillation (a-fib). However, since it was approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in December 2012, Eliquis has been linked to reports of severe, potentially irreversible bleeding events including bleeding in the brain, intestinal bleeding, kidney bleeding, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and death.
Yet despite these problems, Eliquis enjoys the top spot in the institutional setting, including hospitals, and among cardiologists, where it’s surpassed not only its next-gen peers but also standby warfarin, which still has a big hold on the U.S. anticoagulant market.
Even as Pfizer and BMS are in court in Delaware to protect their patents, lawsuits have been filed against them by former Eliquis users who claim they withheld evidence regarding the bleeding risks associated with the drug.
