The DePuy Synthes Adaptor and Light Adaptor are power sources for the Small Battery Drive and Small Battery Drive II surgical power tool systems, which are used for drilling or cutting bone during orthopedic surgery. The adaptors and surgical tool systems are only for use in hospitals and other healthcare facilities.

Which Products are Affected by the Recall?

This recall affects approximately 451 DePuy Synthes Adaptor and Light Adaptor for SBD and SBD II, serial numbers 05.001.024 and 05.001.108. These devices were manufactured from Oct. 6, 2005 to Apr. 5, 2016, and distributed between Jan. 2006 and June 2016.

FDA Recommendation

According to the FDA, customers of the SBD and SBD II adaptor and light adaptor should quarantine the devices and contact the manufacturer for return information. Those who may be affected include surgeons and other healthcare providers who use the adaptor and light adaptor, patients who undergo surgery with the devices, and bystanders or other staff who are close to where the products are being used. This is a Class I Recall, which means that use of recalled products could result in serious injury or even death.
