What’s the Problem?
September 21, 2017 – Death Wish Coffee Co. initiated the recall for all 11-oz. Nitro Cold Brew cans after is was found they were processed in a way that could lead to the growth and production botulin, the toxin that causes botulism in humans.
“Our customers’ safety is of paramount importance and Death Wish Coffee is taking this significant, proactive step to ensure that the highest quality, safest and, of course, strongest coffee products we produce are of industry-exceeding standards,” said Mike Brown, founder of Death Wish Coffee Co.

Botulism thrives in low acid foods that have been commercialized in reduced oxygen packaging. The toxin attacks a person’s nerves, causing breathing problems, and in severe cases, death.
FDA said the processing method Death Wish uses to make its Nitro Cold Brew could cause botulin to grow.
- Difficulty swallowing or speaking
- Dry mouth
- Facial weakness on both sides of the face
- Blurred or double vision
- Drooping eyelids
- Trouble breathing
- Nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps
All 11-oz. Nitro Cold Brew cans have been pulled from shelves and are no longer sold on the Death Wish website.
No cases of botulism poisoning have been associated with the recall, and the action was taken as a “precautionary step,” according to the company.
Consumers who purchased Death Wish Coffee affected by the recall will be refunded in 60 days.
