3 Dead, 671 Sickened from Cucumber Salmonella Outbreak
October 1, 2015 – The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) continue to investigate an outbreak of salmonella illnesses that have affected nearly 700 people in 34 states.
FDA announced this week that 3 people died and another 113 have been hospitalized with salmonellosis after eating tainted cucumbers sourced from Mexico and supplied by Andrew & Williamson Fresh Produce of San Diego, Calif., under the “Limited Edition Pole Grown Cucumbers” label and by Custom Produce Sales, which are sold under the “Fat Boy” brand.
Affected cucumbers are described as dark green, 7-10 inches long, and “American” or “slicer” variety. The products are typically sold in bulk without individual labels or packaging.
The first illnesses linked to the outbreak were reported on July 3, 2015 and continued to Sept. 21. FDA recommends that consumers avoid eating recalled products, and to inquire with retailers and restaurants about what company supplies their cucumbers.
Most people with salmonella experience varying degrees of diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps and other symptoms within hours of infection. In severe cases, the infection may spread from the intestines to the bloodstream, damaging organs unless the person is treated with antibiotics.
Children, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems are the most likely to get salmonella food poisoning. It is estimated that about 400 people in the U.S. die each year from salmonellosis.
