What’s the Problem?
July 25, 2017 – The Loudoun County Health Department said that over 135 people got sick after eating at a Chipotle in Sterling, Virginia. The restaurant was voluntarily closed for a day on July 18 amid reports of customers experiencing vomiting and diarrhea, according to USA Today.
The restaurant reopened the next day after a full cleaning, but health officials did confirm one case of norovirus among the illnesses. Norovirus is a common virus that can be transmitted from person to person, or in food or water that has been infected, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The virus can also be spread by touching contaminated surfaces.
CDC says symptoms of norovirus typically appear 12 to 48 hours after exposure; all 135 illnesses associated with the most recent incident were in people who at the Chipotle in Virginia between July 13 and July 16.
Dr. David Goodfriend, director of the Loudoun County Health Department, said last week he didn’t believe the food supply was a concern, but open containers were discarded as a precautionary measure.
“Based on symptoms reported and these preliminary laboratory results, the cause of the outbreak is believed to be norovirus, though the specific source of the norovirus has not yet been identified,” Goodfriend said. “The Health Department is not aware of any customers becoming ill since the reopening of the facility last Wednesday.”
A spokesperson for Chipotle said the illnesses were isolated to the location in Sterling, but the incident has affected company stocks. Chipotle’s share price dropped 4% on Tuesday after the news surfaced, according to CNN Money.
