Update: Boston Chipotle Reopens After Norovirus Outbreak
December 30, 2015 – Chipotle has reopened its Cleveland Circle location in Boston, which was closed earlier this month after a norovirus outbreak sickened at least 136 customers, according to CBS News. The restaurant was shut down December 7 after dozens of people, including some members of the Boston College men’s basketball team, fell ill with similar symptoms. Health officials linked the outbreak to Chipotle after it was determined that the ill had all eaten at the restaurant before their symptoms appeared.
What’s the problem?
December 7, 2015 – News of the new infections spread when 8 Boston College basketball players missed a game Sunday due to food poisoning, according to CBS News. The athletes were among 28 others who reported getting sick after eating at the Cleveland Circle Chipotle on 1924 Beacon Street. BC’s medical staff circulated an e-mail around campus alerting students and faculty that “numerous people on campus caught E.coli from the Chipotle restaurant in Cleveland Circle.” As a result of the illnesses, the restaurant shut down for deep cleaning.
E. coli outbreaks have been linked to Chipotle restaurants in several states over the past month. Prior to the unconfirmed Massachusetts cases, the most recent illnesses occurred in Maryland, Illinois and Pennsylvania. To date, at least 52 people in 9 states have been sickened by what the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says are E. coli infections. At least 20 people have been hospitalized as a result of their illness, according to the CDC.
