What’s the Problem?

Arthur Rathburn, former operator of International Biological Inc. in Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan, told U.S. District Judge Paul Borman that he “is not happy with his current lawyer” and wants a new one. Borman agreed to appoint one.

Rathburn was indicted by a Detroit jury last January in connection with a 2012 incident at O’Hare International Airport in which investigators found a package filled with 18 human heads arriving from Italy.

Federal agents raided the International Biological warehouse in December 2013, seizing thousands of humans remains and calling the facility a “hub of the illegal activity.” Rathburn has been charged with 9 counts of wire fraud, 3 counts of making false statements and 1 count of transporting hazardous material.

Rathburn’s wife pleaded to 1 count of wire fraud in March 2016 and was ordered to pay more than $55,000 in restitution. Her sentencing has been delayed because she will be serving as a government witness at her husband’s trial.

Arthur Rathburn, who has rejected plea deals by prosecutors, faces 20 years in prison on each of the 13 counts he faces.
