A Mississippi woman has filed a lawsuit against the 3M Company and Arizant Healthcare after she allegedly developed a catastrophic knee infection while undergoing surgery with a Bair Hugger forced air warming blanket.

What’s the problem?
According to the lawsuit, the Bair Hugger was used to stabilize plaintiff Tracy Crawford’s body temperature during knee replacement surgery. However, the warming blanket drew bacterial contaminants from the operating room floor and circulated them onto the surgical site, resulting in a severe deep-seated knee infection.
After the surgery, Crawford was forced to have her knee implant removed and replaced with an antibiotic spacer because of the infection, according to the lawsuit. After months of treatment, Crawford had another knee replacement implanted, and has required additional surgeries as well.
The complaint, which was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota, accuses 3M and Arizant of selling and manufacturing an unreasonably dangerous medical device.
MDL Requested for Knee & Hip Surgery Infection Lawsuits
An application was recently filed with a panel of federal judges to consolidate all Bair Hugger lawsuits into a multidistrict litigation (MDL) for pretrial handling. MDLs are designed to reduce duplicative discovery, avoid conflicting rulings by different judges, and to serve the convenience of all parties involved. It is anticipated that the litigation will end up in Minnesota federal court; 3M’s world headquarters are located in Minneapolis.
Bair Hugger Lawsuits allege that the warming blanket affects the laminar flow of the operating room, allowing bacteria from the floor to enter the surgical site. When this occurs, patients can sustain injuries including Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), sepsis and deep joint infections. In the most severe cases, patients have had their knees and legs amputated.
