What’s the problem?
The lawsuit, which was filed by Manuel Griego of California, alleges that 3M knew for years about the increased risk of infection from the Bair Hugger, and that the device causes bacteria and other airborne contaminants to be transported from the operating room floor to the surgical site.
According to the complaint, Griego’s original knee implant had to be removed and replaced with an antibiotic spacer for 3 months, after which a new knee replacement was implanted. Griego alleges that 3M and Arizant have known since at least 2009 that the warming blanket can increase the surgical infection risk; however, the companies hid this information from the public.
To date, more than 20 lawsuits have been filed against 3M and Arizant alleging catastrophic injuries from the Bair Hugger warming blanket. Complications associated with the bair Hugger include methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), also known as sepsis, limb amputations and death.
Joint Replacement Infections
The Bair Hugger blanket supplies warm air to maintain core body temperature during orthopedic joint replacement surgery. Studies have shown that warming during surgery can reduce the risk of bleeding and improve post-surgical outcomes.
However, many patients allege they developed severe joint infections that could have been prevented if the Bair Hugger wasn’t used during their surgery. According to lawsuits, the forced-air system affects the laminar flow inside the operating room, allowing bacteria and other contaminant particles from the floor to be recirculated into the surgical site, leading to increased rates of hip and knee infections after joint replacement surgery.
