Tolleson, Arizona-based JBS Tolleson Inc. is recalling 6,500,966 pounds of “various raw, non-intact beef products” in response to an outbreak of salmonella infections, the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced Thursday.

What’s the problem?
October 5, 2018 – The recall was issued after health officials identified JBS Tolleson as the likely source of the salmonella illnesses, according to CNN.
FSIS says at least 57 cases of salmonella infection have been reported in 16 states from Aug. 5 to Sept. 6. Investigators made the link between the illnesses and JBS beef after looking over patients’ grocery receipts and shopper cards.
The recalled products were packaged between July 26 and September 7, and sold at retailers across the U.S. including Walmart, Cedar River Farms Natural Beef, Showcase, Showcase/Walmart and JBS Generic.
The USDA inspection mark on the packaging of the recalled products contains the establishment number “EST. 267.”
Signs and symptoms of salmonella infection typically begin 12 to 72 hours after ingesting contaminated food, and may include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever that lasts between 4 and 7 days. Most people recover without medical intervention, but patients who get the persistent diarrhea may require hospitalization.
Fourteen patients from this outbreak have been hospitalized, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). No deaths have been reported to date.
