What’s the Problem?
September 25, 2017 – By the time Plaintiff Jeffrey Konrad suffered a heart attack in 2010, AbbVie has been told it needed a study to investigate the potential heart risks associated with use of AndroGel, Konrad’s attorneys contended. However, the company never conducted the study, instead focusing its energy on expanding the supplement’s approval in an effort to maximize profits, the complaint states.
AbbVie denies the claims of Konrad and thousands of others in MDL 2545, which is currently in the pretrial handling phase in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
Konrad’s attorneys insist that studies do in fact exist that draw a link between the use of synthetic testosterone and an increased risk for heart attacks, strokes, and other adverse cardiovascular events. It was the drugmaker’s duty to address these risks if AndroGel was to remain on the market, the suit alleges.
Konrad was 49 when he had the heart attack in April 2010, which occurred just two months after his doctor began prescribing him AndroGel for “Low T,” according to the lawsuit.
He filed suit against AbbVie in 2015, and it was presented to a jury this past June. That case ended in a mistrial after one of Konrad’s attorneys fell seriously ill.
The case was restarted Sept. 18, less than 2 months after jurors handed down the first verdict in the testosterone MDL.
