Signal System Down for Safety Upgrades Before South Carolina Amtrak Crash
February 7, 2018 – A South Carolina railroad maintenance crew working on Sunday had disabled a railway signal system to install new technology designed to prevent accidents when an Amtrak train collided with a freight locomotive parked on the track, killing 2 people and injuring nearly 120 more, according to The New York Times.

Amtrak Blames CSX for Accident
The section of track where the wreck occurred was operated by CSX Transportation, a supplier of rail-based freight transportation in North America. The Amtrak train was diverted off its intended route at a switch where a padlock had been attached to steer train traffic that way, according to Robert Sumwalt, chairman of the U.S. National Transportation Board.
“Key to this investigation is learning why the switch was lined that way,” Sumwalt said, calling the event “catastrophic.” An NTSB investigation team was at the site during a press conference on Monday.
Second Amtrak Train Crash in 1 Week
Believe it or not, the South Carolina incident was not the only fatal accident involving an Amtrak train this week. Another crash happened on January 31 when a train transporting several members of Congress and their families was hit by a garbage truck around 11:30 a.m. EST, according to the Washington Post. None of the dozens of members of Congress aboard the train, or their accompanying family members and staff, were among those seriously injured. The man who died was 1 of 3 employees in the disposal truck that had entered the railroad crossing, the Post reports.
