Overview

FDA said the recall affects 2 lots of Alvogen Fentanyl Patch, which were called back amid reports that patches inside some cartons may contain a different dosage than the carton states. This discrepancy may have the potential to lead to life-threatening health complications, such as fentanyl overdose and death, in certain patients, the agency said.

Which Fentanyl Patches are Being Recalled?

Specific product information related to the Alvogen fentanyl recall include:
Lot 180060 of Fentanyl Transdermal System, 12 mcg/h, expiration date 05/2020
Lot 180073 of Fentanyl Transdermal System, 12 mcg/h, expiration date 06/2020

Patients who have discovered the carton contained patches with the wrong dosage are advised to return it where they bought it for a replacement.

The actual fentanyl patches do indicate the proper 50 mcg/h, but if a patient who purchased the 12 mcg/h carton doesn’t notice this and uses the 50 mcg/h patch, it may cause “serious, life-threatening, or fatal respiratory depression,” FDA said.

Alvogen said novice users of the fentanyl patch, children and the elderly population face the greatest potential increased risk. To date, the company said it is unaware of any overdose injuries or other adverse events to be linked to the recalled fentanyl.

Alvogen says it has not received reports of any adverse reactions as a result of the mix-up.
